What do people want to know about divorce? How can one of our FLIM ™ meetings help?

When considering or going through a divorce, people often have several key concerns and questions. Here are some of the main areas our clients ask us about.

Preparation and Readiness

Self-Care and Support: The importance of self-care and seeking support from friends, family, or professionals during the divorce process. We are often asked to recommend professionals who can support clients through the divorce process.

Legal Process

No-Fault Divorce: Knowing that in the UK, no-fault divorce is now used, eliminating the need to assign blame. Understanding this process and the 20-week cooling off period is something we often talk through with clients.

Court Involvement: Recognising that court hearings are often avoidable if agreements can be reached, and if an agreement can be reached the process can be handled on paper or online with the court to get the final formal order recording everything. If an agreement is reached, then a financial consent order is prepared with a Form D81 for approval by a Judge. We explain all of the different ways you can reach agreements without having to go to court.

Financial Considerations:

Property Division: How to divide assets, including the family home and savings, and understanding that there are no set formulas for this.

Child Maintenance and Spousal Maintenance: Understanding how spousal support and child support is considered.

Impact on Children:

Parenting Plans: How to arrange how much time children spend with each parent and that understanding custody and access orders no longer exist so parents can agree their parenting plan without the need for a court order.

Short and Long-Term Planning: Ensuring that children's needs are met both immediately and in the long term.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls:

Avoiding Adversarial Behaviour: Recognising that a competitive approach can prolong and worsen the stress of the divorce process, especially for children.

Seeking Professional Advice: Understanding the importance of consulting with lawyers, mediators, and financial advisors to make informed decisions.

By understanding these aspects, individuals can better navigate the complex and often emotionally challenging process of divorce. If you need information about the process before you feel ready to decide on next steps one of our FLIM ™ meetings will help. You can attend one of these on your own or with your partner. You can book on our website by following the BOOK NOW button in the top right-hand corner of our home page. The meetings cost £150. Alternatively, call us on 0800 206 2258.
