How long does mediation take

Family mediation typically takes between 3 to 6 sessions, with each session lasting 90 minutes to 2 hours.

The duration depends on the complexity of the issues and the willingness of both parties to reach an agreement.

Before mediation can start both parties must have a separate and private meeting called a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting) with the mediator they are going to work with moving forward.

Sessions are usually spaced about 2 weeks apart, allowing mediation to conclude in several months. If mediation is being used to help a couple sort out financial issues because of their separation or divorce, the 2 weekly meetings can only start after full financial disclosure has been provided.

Mediation is generally faster and more flexible than court proceedings, which can take much longer. A typical court case currently takes 8-12 months and often longer.

Several factors can influence the length of family mediation:

Complexity of Issues: Simple issues may require fewer sessions, while complex matters, such as financial settlements, can extend the process.

Level of Conflict: High conflict or communication breakdowns between parties can prolong mediation, while willingness to compromise can shorten it.

Flexibility and Willingness to Compromise: The more flexible and willing the parties are to find a resolution, the quicker the mediation process can be.

Preparation and Scheduling: Being prepared with necessary information and having flexible schedules can also expedite the process.

Family mediation is often a couples preferred choice of the options available to help them reach an amicable agreement, stay out of court and keep their costs down.
